Subject: Oppose S5506 – Protect Local Control
Hello,
My name is ___ and I live in ___ (town/city).
I am writing to strongly oppose Senate Bill S5506. This bill would strip local governments of their land-use authority by placing large battery energy storage systems under the state’s ORES fast-track siting process.
Given the proposed lithium-ion battery storage project in Hauppauge, this legislation has direct and serious implications for our community, including nearby schools, neighborhoods, and first responders. Decisions that affect public safety, zoning, and long-term community planning must remain in the hands of local towns, planning boards, and the residents they serve — not transferred to a centralized state process that limits meaningful local input.
Fast-tracking industrial-scale lithium-ion facilities in densely populated areas without full local oversight raises legitimate safety, environmental, and infrastructure concerns. Our fire districts, school officials, and residents deserve a real voice in decisions that impact their safety and quality of life. I respectfully urge you to oppose S5506 and stand with local communities in preserving home rule authority.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
