Residents in Hauppauge, NY have expressed strong opposition to a proposed battery energy storage facility planned by LIPA and Key Capture Energy at the intersection of Rabro Drive and Route 111. Critics argue the project poses safety hazards to the community, especially given past fires at similar sites, and are concerned about traffic congestion and proximity to homes and businesses.

Protesters gathered outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel where local lawmakers were attending an economic forum to voice their objections. Supporters of the project say that modern battery storage systems are safe and crucial for expanding clean energy infrastructure, citing rigorous international and national safety standards.

The Town of Islip currently has a moratorium on the project through September 2026, effectively pausing development pending further review and community input.
